  • The New York State Canal Corp director and his engineering team made their annual stop in Fairport Thursday as part of their annual checkup of Erie Canal towns.
Each year, director Brian Stratton travels the 524-mile canal system as his team inspects each lock and liftbridge along the way. The tour started last week, to the west, in Albion.
The crew stopped at Corn Hill landing in Rochester and Lock 62 in Pittsford Thursday morning before pulling into Fairport in the afternoon. The liftbridge received good marks from the engineers.
Stratton said the canal yields approximately $380 million in revenue for the state.
He added that there are more opportunities to use it as a resource, and it all starts with looking at what's already there.
"This is part of why the governor wants us to get out of the office, and work hand in hand with local governments to do all we can to support this great economic engine," Stratton said.
