All of our questions about who are the best teams and athletes in Section 5 will be answered over the next 30 days. February might have the least amount of days but the stakes may be higher than any other month during the year.
The sectional competitions kick off Friday when the Section 5 Wrestling Championships will be contested throughout the area. The large school tournaments should produce plenty of drama and memorable moments.
Pittsford, Webster Schroeder and Penfield should be in contention for the Class AA title. The Warriors were the regular season league champions but the Panthers were the highest Class AA finisher at the Monroe County Championships last month as they earned third place.
The Panthers enter sectionals with two title favorites in Brady Baron and Jacob Pincus. Kenton DeCross and Tyler Gross will also be among those competing for spots in the finals for Pittsford.
The Warriors appear to have two solid favorites in Alec Dierna and Andrew Wightman who easily won titles at the Monroe County Championships. Josh Reed should be in contention for a title no matter where he wrestles, while Adam Grueveski and Hobie Strassner should also score high finishes.
Eric Harley was the only Penfield wrestler to reach the finals at the Monroe County Championships but don’t expect him to be alone this weekend. Parker Kropman, Nick Cegelski and Chris Giancursio should be in contention for titles Saturday night.
What else should you look for this weekend in Fairport? How about hometown heavyweights Colton Kells and Josh Lackey, who won titles at the Monroe County championships. Hilton lightweight Vincent Deprez will look to continue his domination of Section 5, two weeks after crushing the competition at the County meet.
The rivalry between Spencerport and Brockport should heat up this weekend at Wayne. The Rangers held off the Blue Devils by 8.5 points at the Monroe County Championships then won last weekend’s dual meet.
How close are these two schools? Both had five athletes reach the County finals with three bringing home individual titles.
Both teams boast wrestlers who should be heavy favorites in their bracket in Barton Peters (Brockport) and Jon Haas (Spencerport). The competition should come down to who can win the consolation matches and gain the key third through sixth place positions.
Greece Olympia’s Jake Debuyser will look to win what could be a competitive 285-pound bracket also featuring Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Jack Weldon and Brighton’s Matt Mahon. Debuyser defeated Weldon 2-1 in double overtime at Counties.
