As a resident of the village of Brockport and an employee of the Lakeside Health System, I am writing to express my concern and opposition of the Unity Health System’s intent to expand their services by occupying a $3.1 million building in the town of Sweden.

The Lakeside Health System is an excellent example of what community health care should be. It is made up of physicians and employees who have a vested interest in the well-being of the individuals in this community. The Lakeside Health System has responded to the needs of this community consistently over the years and through its collaborative agreement with the University of Rochester Medical Center will continue to do so well into the future.

Lakeside’s quality scores are among the best in the area and well above the New York state average. Unity’s attempt to expand into our well-served area is simply to expand market share and shift patients to their system subsequently weakening the Lakeside Health System. Their claim that this will create jobs is a poor argument given there is no justified need for what they seek to do. Both the New York State Hospital Association and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicate through their data that additional primary care physicians are not needed in our area. Additionally, there is more than an adequate supply of physical therapy providers in this area with three alone in Brockport, as well as providers in Hilton, Le Roy and Spencerport. Full-service radiology is offered at Lakeside as well as laboratory services. Why duplicate what is already there?

There is much at stake here for the Brockport area and the Lakeside Health System. Lakeside is very strategic geographically for this region in terms of access to care. Any threat to weaken its presence must be taken seriously by the member of this community. Could you imagine what it would be like if Lakeside wasn’t there? Where would you go if you needed quick access to an emergency room? The overwhelming justification in favor of not supporting this endeavor is clear to me. Please support Lakeside, your community health system, by opposing this unnecessary, unneeded and unwanted expansion.
