The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is reminding snowmobilers to ride responsibly and exercise caution.
Snowmobile operators should be familiar with safe riding practices and all applicable laws, rules and regulations. A safety certificate is required for ages 10-18. To find a snowmobile safety course, visit bit.ly/2jjGtt6.
Always check over the snowmobile before riding to make sure it is in good working order and features emergency supplies. Riders need to wear a helmet and proper gear such as bibs, jackets, boots and gloves.
Always ride with another person and ride within their abilities. Respect landowners, obey posted signs and stay on the marked trail, riding on the right. Frozen bodies of water are not designated trails.
Never drink alcohol or use drugs before riding.
Riders should check trail conditions with local snowmobile clubs. To find a club, visit nysnowmobiler.com.
