A young male black bear, which was found wandering on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus in October, was hit and killed by a car last weekend near Arkport in western Steuben County.
The bear was released in October on state land in the Southern Tier by Department of Environmental Conservation officials.
Senior Wildlife Biologist Art Kirsch said the bear had traveled about 20 miles from its release site in the course of two months and had put on 20 to 30 pounds.
The person who hit the bear obtained a possession tag to keep him, presumably for taxidermy purposes, said Kirsch.
To report a bear sighting, call the local DEC office at (585) 226-5380.
