A Palmyra man was seriously injured when his vehicle was forced into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer at the intersection of Route 31 and Galloway Road in Palmyra Thursday morning, May 3.

According to police,  Donald Stell, 77, of Palmyra, was stopped in his green Buick in the eastbound lane of Route 31, waiting to turn left onto Galloway Road, when a vehicle driven by Elizabeth J. Smyth, 24, of Palmyra, came up behind him and ran into the back of his car. The collision forced Stell’s car into the westbound lane and directly in the path of a tractor trailer traveling west on Route 31.

The tractor trailer careened off the north side of the road, striking several small trees and brush before coming to a stop several feet off the road shoulder.

The accident is still under investigation. Wayne County sheriff’s accident reconstruction crews were on scene much of the day to determine the cause of the accident.

Stell was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and remains in guarded condition. Smyth was taken to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital to be evaluated.

Wayne County sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by Port Gibson, Palmyra, East Palmyra and Macedon fire departments; Finger Lakes Ambulance; New York State Department of Transportation; and State Police Commercial Enforcement.
