The Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester and Finger Lakes Chapter, will begin new art and music programs for people with dementia in December.
"Memories in the Making" is a free art-making program for people with dementia and their care partners. It will debut Monday, Dec. 3 at Pieters Family Life Center, 1025 Commons Way. The free program will run every first and third Monday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Memories in the Making is an opportunity for people with dementia and their care partners to express themselves using a variety of safe, nontoxic media, from pencils to watercolors to collage materials to oil pastels.
"The Sound Sessions" begin Dec. 12. Board-certified music therapist Nancy Krutenat of LifeSongs will lead a free music therapy program for people with dementia. The Sound Sessions will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the second Wednesday of the month at Pieters Family Life Center.
Music therapy is designed to promote wellness, manage stress, express feelings and improve communication. Activities in the group will include singing and playing instruments, as well as listening to music, writing songs, reminiscing and analyzing lyrics.
The Alzheimer’s Association offers "Meet Me at the MAG", a free tour of the Memorial Art Gallery on
the first Tuesday of the month from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, people with dementia and their care partners can attend special free open rehearsals of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
